The Shenandoah County Retired Teachers Association recently presented a $1,000 scholarship to Melanie Woods, a physical education teacher at North Fork Middle School for the past eight years. Woods, who has a master’s degree in kinesiology from James Madison University, will use the scholarship to pursue certification in school leadership and administration. Woods was also named this year’s Teacher of the Year for North Fork. The SCRTA presents a yearly scholarship to a student planning to go into education or teacher pursuing an advanced degree.
Brett W. Hrbek of Edward Jones in Front Royal has been authorized by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to use the certification mark CFP. Hrbek successfully completed CFP Board’s initial certification requirements, which include completion of financial planning coursework and passing a comprehensive exam.
Dr. Craig Zunka attended the Shenandoah Valley Dental Association Spring Continuing Education Conference on May 30. The conference was presented by Dr. Richard Wynn on “Drugs in Dentistry: Latest information on conventional drugs, herbals and nutraceuticals.”
Northern Shenandoah Valley Adult Education will acknowledge adults who have earned their GED credential, gained citizenship or made notable accomplishments this year at a recognition ceremony at Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Elizabeth Creamer, adviser for workforce development in the office of the secretary of commerce and trade for Gov. Terry McAuliffe, will serve as keynote speaker at the ceremony. The NSVAE served 945 adults this year in Winchester and Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren counties, and about 240 adult students attained their GED.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe has proclaimed June as Dairy Month in the Commonwealth. In 2013, VIrginia had 630 licensed Grade-A dairy farms, nine commercial milk processing plants and three on-farm bottling plants. The top dairy-producing counties, in descending order, were Rockingham, Franklin, Pittsylvania, Augusta, Fauquier and Clarke.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is encouraging Virginia farmers to participate in two important mid-year surveys from the National Agricultural Statistics Service. In June, NASS will survey nearly 1,600 farms across Virginia to determine crop production and supply levels in 2014. All reports are available at nass.usda.gov.
